The year 2021 was very much a continuation of 2020, with Cetie managing almost all of its work through remote meetings, with systematic adoption of "virtual" solutions. The 12 active working groups worked on a total of 84 documents resulting in 27 publications (see the list below).
This very high figure - which was exceeded in 2020, but only on account of catching up a backlog - was obtained thanks to the involvement of the Cetie experts in nearly 70 group meetings. This allows not only the rapid addressing of new problems but also the gradual reviewing and updating of old documents.
Two-thirds of the "old" documents (dating back from 7 to 14 years) have thus been revised in the last two years. As a result of this, we now have 64 recent documents (less than 3 years old) compared with just 20 at the start of 2018.
Meeting the Directive requiring attached caps on single-use plastic bottles
This European Directive 904/2019 has entailed substantial work to define a harmonised standard. This standard, prepared at Cetie and passed on to CEN (European Committee for Standardisation), has now passed the first stage of enquiry. It should be published in the third quarter of this year under the reference EN 17665. Alongside this, European bottling manufacturers have been working intensively at adapting their products and their filling-capping lines, which must all be modified by 2024. To share the development effort, the members of Cetie have developed a screw finish for PET bottles intended for carbonated beverages, designed specially to accommodate attached caps. In less than two years, this collaboration resulted in the publication of Cetie data sheet GME30.40 defining the geometry of this finish, with three support ledge options.
This exceptionally short time frame, from the first exchange of ideas and concept to the drafting of the document and its approval by enquiry among the members, passing through all the qualification and industrialisation stages, including consumer feedback on millions of bottles, reflects the agility of the Cetie ecosystem when a subject needs to move forward rapidly. Jointly developing new solutions This ability to rapidly develop a joint solution was also used in the area of flaconnage, where the glass manufacturers, the pump manufacturers and the perfumers worked together under the auspices of Cetie to produce the first three finishes in early 2021 (data sheets GME40.20 /25 /30). These finishes allow and facilitate not just the recycling but even the reuse of the flacons, which means they are of crucial importance in our present context. Following the first edition of these data sheets, thanks to the pooling of skills and the approval efforts, the work continued to extend the range of finishes to other diameters, resulting in a total of eight finishes to date. This first revision was published just six months after the first edition.
And as is the case with all Cetie documents, these solutions developed by its members are available free of charge to all the market players.
At the core of Cetie's dynamism: The will to harmonise practices and references
The topics that are progressing the fastest are those for which the Cetie members need standardisation to ensure greater simplicity and/or rigour in their practices.
Some areas remain to be harmonised, but Cetie will only be able to address them when the demand has been clearly expressed by the users or the suppliers.
