Cetie, an association at the service of its members

Serving the bottling industries in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors for over half a century,

Cetie (Centre International Technique de l’Embouteillage - International Technical Centre for Bottling and Related Packaging) publishes prenormative technical documents such as good practice guidelines and technical reference documents that are used the world over. This not-for-profit association is run by its members (some 80 companies and federations, the latter representing groups of companies) who meet in various working groups, thereby pooling their respective know-how. The aim is to guarantee that the various branches of the sector have a common foundation of skills, knowledge and language.
These documents, for which Cetie is the guarantor and sole distributor, meet the demands of the bottling sector professionals.
  • They provide continuity of technical knowledge and learning for the sector's players;
  • They clarify regulatory and standardising issues;
  • The guarantee a reliable informative basis for packaging development;
  • They prevail in the event of a dispute.

Access to our library of Cetie reference publications is available on request from our website www.cetie.org.
Please contact us to create a user space to download the documents that interest you.
Cetie is also ready to answer any questions concerning any problems you may encounter in the bottling sector.
Examples of work in progress

Caps Group 3 - Crown Caps

In the light of recent developments, particularly in sealing materials and the thickness of the metal as appropriate for the specific glass finishes for both pry-off
and twist-off crown caps, this group is conducting an initial analysis because of the development of a CEN standard for crown caps. It meets a specific mandate of the committee CEN TC 261 / SC5 / WG21 (glass packaging). This group will also be active in the joint ad hoc working groups with the glass manufacturers and fillers to ensure the compatibility of the caps with the closure system as a whole.
Next meetings: 10/03 for the Caps Group 3, date to be specified for the joint group in Spring 2015.

Ad hoc group

Bottling Guide No.9 Metallic screw capping for pressurised wines and other beverages on BVS type glass finishes
This guide follows on from the work on Bottling Guide No.6 on metallic screw capping for still wines (see L & C No. 374) to cover the use of this type of closure for wines and other liquids with a CO2 content of more than 1.2 g/litre. This type of application is currently developing and requires specific precautions equally well for the closure system as for the bottling and filling process, particularly the headspace. As with bottling guide No.6, this group brings together glass manufacturers, closure and equipment manufacturers and fillers, who had their first meeting on 17/02.
Next meetings: 06/05/2015. It is planned to hold the meetings every three months.

PET Finish, Sports closure, Plastic Closures Qualification Tests Groups

Initially focusing on the design definition of finishes for PET, this group, through the creation of sub-groups, has gradually extended its scope of action to specific issues relating to the closure of PET bottles. The group is thus currently finishing an informative document, FS18, on the screw cap index marks or pull-up marks intended more specifically to allow automatic in-process checks. Sub-groups are currently in operation, one working on the qualification tests for closures on PET, a subject that has led to a collaboration with the ISBT (International Society of Beverage Technologists), with which Cetie is now working in partnership. Another group is examining recommendations for "sports caps" which can present a risk of choking if the movable part comes off in the mouth, following, in particular, the work carried out in the United Kingdom by the British Soft Drinks Association, with which Cetie also has an association agreement.
The PET meetings are thus at present generally held over a day and a half: one plenary meeting followed by two sub-group meetings. The plenary group is continuing its work on the preparation of PET sheets for the finishes: 13 sheets are currently in progress. For some finishes, they include test phases coordinated between the group members and more frequent telephone meetings to follow each of the test phases carried out by the preform, bottle and closure manufacturers. Next meetings: 12/05/2015 and 08/09/2015.

Glass manufacturers groups

The glass manufacturers groups have started a systematic review of all Cetie publications covering glass packaging, some of which date back more than 30 years. The aim is to check that the content is still relevant and up to date, and to revamp the page layout. At present, the series of glossaries of glass, critical and visual defects (DT26.00, DT26.01 and DT26.10) is being revised and a new version with an enhanced presentation will be available during 2015, in French, English, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Italian. A revised version of the surface treatment sheet (DT13) and new sheets on the impact tests (DT33) and volume calculation (DT32) will also be published this year. The glass manufacturers groups' meetings are held three times a year, with intermediate meetings of sub-groups on specific themes, often taking the form of telephone/screen sharing meetings. Next meetings: 24 and 25/06/2015, plenary meeting on 11 and 12/09/2015.
